Dr. AbdulWahab Homad
(1915-2002)
In 1949, at thirty-four, he became general rapporteur of Syria's constitutional committee and helped write the country's first constitution to declare it a democratic Arab republic. Over the decade that followed he held seven ministerial posts, including Minister of Justice during the 1958 union with Egypt, where he refused to purge the judiciary under political pressure and personally intervened to spare condemned men from execution. He was imprisoned in 1951 for his own political convictions, taught criminal law for four decades across Syria, Morocco, and Kuwait, and in 1990 was elected to the Arabic Language Academy in Damascus, one of the most selective learned societies in the Arab world.
May God have mercy on his soul.
